What Does an Energy Healing Session Feel Like?
One of the strange things about energy healing is that something can be happening without anyone physically touching you.
But if you think about it, energy is moving through you and around you all day independently anyway. Your breath flows in and out, your heart beats, you digest your food.
The breeze in the trees.
The waves ebb and flow.
So what does an energy healing session actually feel like?
Honestly, it depends.
Energy is subtle. We all perceive it differently, and what you notice can change from one session to the next.
Some people feel a lot.
Some people feel almost nothing.
Neither is evidence that you're doing it right or wrong.
In fact, you can’t get it wrong.
I know some incredibly powerful energy healers that claim they don’t feel much of anything while they’re healing and yet their clients experience profound shifts.
Wild, right?
What might you feel during energy healing?
People I've worked with have described warmth, tingling, pulsing, waves of sensation and a feeling of movement through the body.
One person described it beautifully as:
a tide flowing from her feet and moving up towards her back.
Other people become deeply relaxed. They might notice memories, images or emotions appearing. Sometimes there's a sudden insight or an unexpected sense of clarity.
And sometimes you just lie there, and that in itself is lovely.
There are no prizes for seeing colours… though you may and that’s neat too.
I'm more interested in what happens afterwards
I've become increasingly uninterested in whether a healing session produces BIG feels.
I'm much more curious about what happens next.
How do you sleep that night?
How's your energy the following morning?
Does your body feel different?
Are you responding differently to something that usually winds you up?
Has something you've been wrestling with suddenly become clearer?
Sometimes the change is obvious. Sometimes it's incredibly subtle.
This is one of the reasons I prefer working with people over a period of time rather than treating every session as an isolated event.
Each session builds on the last.
You don't have to believe in energy healing
This is important to me.
You don't have to believe anything.
You don't need to be spiritual. You don't need to understand Qi. You don't need to be able to sense energy.
You certainly don't need to convince yourself that something magical is happening because you've booked an energy healing session.
You can just be curious.
My own relationship with this work developed because I kept noticing things I couldn't explain when I was working as a massage therapist.
I had already spent years working with people through the body and through psychotherapy, and I became fascinated by the shifts that seemed to happen when I started working energetically.
Eventually curiosity won.
I trained in Medical Qigong and energy medicine and began incorporating this way of working into a much larger body of practice. I’ve been training ever since!
Your experience is your experience
Perhaps that's the most important thing.
I don't want to tell someone what they're supposed to feel.
Your body is giving you information all the time.
For me, energy work is another way of becoming quiet enough to notice it.
And sometimes what you notice during the session isn't nearly as interesting as the person you discover yourself becoming afterwards.
